Operation Safe Driver Week 2023

Operation Safe Driver Week, an annual campaign conducted by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), will take place from July 9-15, 2023. This year’s focus will be on risky driving. The following guidance provides further information on the purpose of Operation Safe Driver Week and explains this year’s focus.

The Purpose of Operation Safe Driver Week

Operation Safe Driver Week is an annual, seven-day initiative created the CVSA to help detect and prevent unsafe behaviors on the road among commercial drivers. During this weeklong campaign, law enforcement agencies throughout North America typically participate in increased traffic safety enforcement, focusing on the following risky behaviors:

  • Acting recklessly or aggressively behind the wheel
  • Engaging in distracted driving
  • Following too closely
  • Conducting improper control devices
  • Failing to obey traffic control devices
  • Neglecting to use a seatbelt
  • Driving under the influence

As usual, drivers violating any safety regulations could be issued a warning or citation.

In addition to heightened traffic safety enforcement, Operation Safe Driver Week calls for increased education and awareness of safe driving practices. As such, law enforcement agencies, transportation safety officials and motor carriers are encouraged to take this time to provide commercial drivers with valuable resources on safe driving behaviors.

2023 Campagin Focus

Each year, the CVSA identifies a specific topic to address during Operation Safe Driver Week. This year’s campaign focuses on both commercial and passenger vehicle drivers engaging in risky driving practices.

The CVSA’s reasoning for selecting this topic is due to the National Traffic Safety Administration’s annual traffic crash report, which showed 22,215 passenger vehicle occupants were killed amid accidents on the road in 2019. Of those incidents, nearly half (47%) of passenger vehicle occupants were not wearing their seatbelts.

Apart from seatbelt usage, speeding, distracted driving, and drunk driving are all high-risk driving behaviors that will be targeted during the campaign.
