trench safety stand-down

Trench Safety Stand-down Week is June 19-23

The National Utility Contractors Association’s (NUCA) annual Trench Safety Stand-down (TSSD) Week will be June 19-23, 2023. This event is a part of NUCA’s annual Trench Safety Month, which occurs throughout June and is supported by OSHA.

Trenching and excavation work involves some of the most dangerous activities in the construction sector. TSSD Week is an opportunity for employers to provide education on its hazards and emphasize the importance of implementing trench and excavation safety measures.

Trench Safety Stand-down Week

Safety stand-downs allow employers to pause work and speak directly with employees and others about safety topics. During TSSD Week, employers should reach out to their employees who work in and around trenches and discuss the current safety procedures and excavation requirements. This can help prevent fatalities and serious injuries that occur in this line of work. TSSD Week also provides employers the opportunity to raise trenching hazard awareness among municipal and industry workers who are exposed to its dangers.

There is no set way to conduct a safety stand-down. For example, tey can involve toolbox talks and/or other safety activities, such as equipment inspections. Job hazards, protective methods and a company’s safety policies, goals and expectations are all potential topics of safety stand-downs.

Trench Safety Stand-down Week Participation

Participation in Trench Safety Stand-down Week is open to all who seek to improve trenching and excavation safety and prevent accidents, injuries and fatalities. Participants could include construction workers (e.g., utility, residential, highway), plumbers, unions, military, associations, safety equipment manufacturers and educational institutes.

Participating companies may also receive a certificate of participation and helmet stickers from NUCA. The association will also publish the list of participating organizations in its printed material following the event.

Safety Stand-down Resources

TSSD Week resources are available on NUCA’s website in English and Spanish. Participation forms can also be submitted through a link on that page.
